Asking for prayers...

Here she is, in all her glory. Just before I brought her to the veterinary hospital for a three to four day stay in their intensive care unit. Because she’s sick. Very sick, though you’d never guess it to look at her. She is her beautiful, cantankerous self. Except that she hasn’t eaten since Wednesday, and her fluid intake is about half of what it should be. I brought her to the vet yesterday, and after discussing all the things it could be, we started out with the basics. We were able to entice her with a yummy highly-concentrated prescription food, so we brought her home with a few cans, enough to last us through the weekend. She ate a bit more at home, and she was drinking more. We called the vet as requested before the end of business on Friday and told her things were looking good.

But this morning, she hadn't eaten any more and threw up again. Brian brought her to the vet this morning. The blood work told us that her creatine levels were very high, and her kidneys were failing. So after some discussion, we brought her to the local emergency veterinary clinic. The decision was to keep her there for the next three to four days and try to bring her blood work back into the normal range. But we are under no illusions. This is a very imprecise process and she is very very sick. We need to balance her health and welfare against the reality of what can be done for her.

So I am posting her tonight to ask for your prayers. Many of you know Ferguson well and I’d like to think that she has touched many lives in her way. She is a loving girl who has given us so much. She is endlessly amusing, talkative and exasperating. She has been a part of our lives since 1995, when she came to us via a friend of DH’s mother. The night before she came to us (Christmas Eve, in fact), she spent the night sleeping on my father-in-law’s chest. And he let her. Because she was cute. When we lived in Las Vegas, she obsessively licked our housemate’s nose – raw! And he let her. Because she was cute.

We love her so much.

Poor kitty for Furguson; Poor Baby for you.

We've had some experience with kidney failure in cats here at the Chili household - Small One is down a couple of those nine lives because of it. We're praying that the ending to this story is as happy as Small One's have yet been, but know that we're here to offer comfort and condolences if it's Ferguson's time to move on.

Oh kidney failure is such a scary balance. I know a few people who have brought cats home and done home hydration, some who've recovered and some not so lucky. Best of luck in making the right decision for her. It's no fun.
